The Monmouth-Independence YMCA started a program branch in 1992 as community leaders of Monmouth-Independence asked the YMCA to assist in childcare needs for the community.  Soon after, the YMCA managed the outdoor Independence public pool and started small sports programs that were in need.  Today, the MI-YMCA serves hundreds of kids through out the year from aquatics, year round childcare, youth sports, Nite Court, special community events and youth aviation classes. Our YMCA continues to grow each year and serves our community needs.

Our YMCA is a branch of the Marion-Polk County YMCA Association. There are two other branches and the main YMCA which is in downtown Salem which is one of the first YMCA on the west coast (over 150 years!).  Our YMCA is a not for profit organization which rely heavily on volunteer support.  Our local YMCA has volunteer board and committees that report to each month and these volunteers help guide and direct the leadership staff that in place. Many of our board members go far beyond the call of duty as a Board Director, many help with annual fund-raising and participate in various ways from coaching camps to helping put together special activities for the community.

The YMCA is a world wide organization and has a rich history of helping invent many of our favorite sports such as the invention of the game Basketball and Volleyball.  To learn more about the YMCA movement, visit the following website: www.youry.org.
